Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Career Development – Career & Professional Development | University of Denver https://career.du.edu Thu, 04 Apr 2024 18:14:20 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.2 Using AI in your Career Search: Interview Preparation https://career.du.edu/blog/2024/02/27/using-ai-in-your-career-search-interview-preparation/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 20:11:04 +0000 https://career.du.edu/?p=155297 You’ve been selected for an interview – congratulations! There are a number of tools you can use to get real-time feedback to help you prepare. One way that you can prepare for interview questions is with ChatGPT. You can use Chat GPT to help you come up with interview questions first. Then you can use it to help come up with answers. If you prompt ChatGPT for tips on how you could answer an interview question like, “What type of management style do you prefer in a supervisor?” the algorithm will then produce some samples and strategies to help you answer the question well. Just like with using AI for cover letters, there is a risk of the answers being general and impersonal. You should also use our resources for prep on Korbel Careers, specifically on the S.T.A.R. format, that can help you to craft thoughtful responses to the different questions you could be asked.

Another AI tool that’s great for interview prep is LinkedIn’s interview prep tool. The page has a series of common interview questions that you can provide an answer for and receive immediate AI-powered feedback, or you can privately request feedback from your connections. As you work with AI to prepare for an interview it is essential that you utilize your own experiences and let your genuine personality show through when formulating responses. Interviewing is still about building a connection between you and the interviewer(s)! While AI can be very useful for some prep tasks, don’t forget about the personal element!

Using AI in your Career Search: Application Materials https://career.du.edu/blog/2024/02/08/using-ai-in-your-career-search-application-materials/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 19:02:18 +0000 https://career.du.edu/?p=153948 You’ve found some interesting job and internship opportunities and it’s now time to prepare your application materials.

If you want a grammar and spelling check or are looking to review resumes, cover letters, and writing samples, Grammarly is an excellent tool. If you want guidance on skills the employer is looking for, copy and paste the position description in ChatGPT and ask it to identify skills that you should emphasize in your resume and cover letter. After uploading your resume and the description of a job you’re applying for into an AI tool, it can tell you how you can improve your resume’s searchability, and what skills should be added or emphasized.

When uploading your resume to ChatGPT or any program, it is essential to remove personal details prior to uploading, as any information given to the program could become a part of future algorithms. For your cover letter, ChatGPT is an excellent resource to help you draft your letter. After giving the program information about yourself and the job you’re applying for, ChatGPT can then develop a draft that you can use to guide and inspire a cover letter that you write yourself. To get even better results, create a first draft to put into ChatGPT so it can give you feedback to improve on your own ideas. Regardless, it is ESSENTIAL that you use the generated text as ideas or edits rather than as your final submission. AI-generated cover letters are general, they do not adequately demonstrate your skills, and cannot write in your own unique voice. Additionally, ChatGPT is not great at explaining your experience in terms of the STAR model, which continues to be an important tool in demonstrating your accomplishments.

Beyond AI, the Office of Career and Professional Development has resources that you can use to improve your cover letters on our Korbel Careers website, and we are happy to meet with you individually to review and edit your materials.

Using AI to explore Career Paths: Matching your Skills https://career.du.edu/blog/2024/02/01/using-ai-to-explore-career-paths-matching-your-skills/ Thu, 01 Feb 2024 18:33:20 +0000 https://career.du.edu/?p=153388 In the job search itself, AI tools can be useful in a variety of ways. You can connect your interests and values to certain positions, update your online profiles, and find current openings from across digital job posting platforms.

If you’re just beginning your job or internship search, you can ask ChatGPT questions like “What are ideal jobs in international relations for a Myers-Briggs INTJ?” or “What are ideal jobs in international relations for an Enneagram 4?” and the program can provide you an idea of what types of jobs could be a good fit for your personality. Next, you may want to see how certain organizations may or may not be a match for your values and ideal working environment. You can ask ChatGPT questions like “What is the company culture like at The Atlantic Council?” or “How would an Enneagram 4 enjoy working at a think tank?” You could also ask questions around your skills and interests like, “What are some good jobs for people who like research and are interested in the environment and gender”. The best results will come when you engage in a dialogue with the tool, so don’t be afraid to ask follow-up questions, or re-ask the same question to see if you can get different or better results.

Once you’re ready to look for openings, ChatGPT won’t be able to help you as it doesn’t have access to real-time listing or the ability to browse the internet. Luckily there are other tools, like Google Bard or Bing Chat, that can help with this problem! Prompting Google Bard along the lines of “What positions are currently open in Denver for a conservation project manager?” will provide a list of available jobs across company websites, LinkedIn, and other locations. Once you have a list, just ask Bard if it has any web links for these positions and you’ll be able to access the job postings yourself.

When used effectively, AI can be an excellent tool for helping you identify your career path as well as finding opportunities that would fit your skills, interests, and values. Having taken these key initial steps, you’ll be able to start applying for jobs and internships – maybe with some further help from AI!

Using AI in your Job Search https://career.du.edu/blog/2024/01/25/using-ai-to-explore-career-paths/ Thu, 25 Jan 2024 18:39:21 +0000 https://career.du.edu/?p=153096 Did you know that AI can be an incredibly useful tool for your job search? You can use ChatGPT and a myriad of other digital tools to find interesting opportunities, review resumes and cover letters, and prep for interviews. Over the coming weeks, we’ll publish blog posts on each of these uses for AI. First, it’s important to consider several caveats for using AI in the job search.

The first consideration is whether the employer is open to applicants using AI tools. Right now, government agencies are against applicants using AI to write their application materials; in the private sector there’s more variance, some are OK with it, some aren’t, and some actively want you to demonstrate your ability to use AI tools. You must always ensure that everything you submit still maintains your voice and that the material the AI writes is true and appropriately completes the required task. Lastly, it’s important to remember that anything you put into an AI tool like ChatGPT becomes part of its algorithm going forward – so be careful about inputting personal data like a resume!

Of course, using AI for these processes is not the end all be all. ChatGPT doesn’t know what you’re really meant to become, Bard can’t always find your dream job from a Google search, and no program can tell your story better than you can tell it yourself. For all the help that AI can’t provide we would love to see you in our office! We have appointments available for career exploration, internship searching, resume review, and much more that you can sign up for through PCO.
